Leadership Opportunities - Secondary

The motto for Yarrawonga College P-12 (Secondary Campus) is ‘Learn Today, Lead tomorrow’. As a school we believe that leadership skills are very important and strive to incorporate leadership opportunities wherever possible for staff and students. The majority of staff at the College have a leadership role and leadership is distributed amongst the school.

At the College , we value student input into decision making and the future of the school, to achieve this we have a Student Representative Council (SRC). The SRC consists of representatives from each year level.

At Year 7, students are given opportunities to develop their leadership skills by assisting in the transition program. Students show the Grade 6 students around the school and support them in a range of learning activities. The Year 8 Leadership group organises and facilitates a range of activities across the year level. This group organised an alternative day for Year 8 which included a range of activities students could choose from and a BBQ lunch.

Students in Years 9 and 10 have the opportunity to be selected as members of the Moira Shire Junior Council. These students join with representatives from several other secondary schools in the Shire to discuss issues, plan and run events specifically for youth in the Moira Shire

The Alpine Leadership School has three campuses that students can attend.  This opportunity is available to Year 9 students only.  YSC has been fortunate to have several groups attend this school over the past few years.  The school applies for a position at the school based on a community project, if the school is successful, eight students live on campus at the school for a term and develop leadership skills. Students who attend this school form a strong leadership group for the school.  Year 10 students also support the Grade 6 Transition Program and support students in completing activities.

Students from Years 7-10 assist the Primary Campus in the running of their sporting days.

The Kododa Trail Leadership Program is also available to Year 10 and 11 students on a biennial basis. Students apply for the program and undergo an extensive application process that includes a resume, interview, a prepared five minute speech and two impromptu speeches in front of a small audience.  Successful applicants then form a team that trains together in preparation for the trek. The Kokoda Trail experience is ten days (nine days on the trail) and on return students act as ANZAC Ambassadors for the College and the community.  The College receives substantial sponsorship that assists with the cost of the trip for staff and students from local service club, ClubMulwala.  Students are guided on the trek by reputable adventure company, Kokoda Spirit.

Sports captains and vice-captains are elected by their peers to lead the houses at the sports carnivals.  Sports Captains can be in Year 10, 11 or 12.  Students in Year 11 can choose to be a Peer Leader, this means that they support the new year 7 cohort during their arrival and transition from primary school.  Year 11 students meet regularly with their Year 7 group.  They also facilitate a Year 7 support room which is available for Year 7 students to use at lunch times.

The Year 12 Leadership team includes a male and female captain and a team of prefects. Year 12 students have the opportunity to nominate to be a prefect and form part of this Leadership Team. This group meets regularly throughout the year to discuss issues facing the school and advise the Principal and Senior School Leader on those issues. This team runs the school assemblies and leads the Student Representative Council in conducting the college formal, the Year 12 graduation dinner, various fund raising activities and other events. They represent the College at community events including the ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies. They are role models and act as support to other students.
