Early Years

This is an area that we have put considerable time and effort developing to ensure that our school is doing the very best we can to set students up for a successful journey through school.  Our major focus for student early learning is on;

  • Yarrawonga Big Day Out where Kindergarten children visit their prospective primary school to gain a feel/insight for what lies ahead in their schooling.
  • Series of transition days in Term 4 for Kindergarten students to attend Primary School over an extended period of time (1 morning per week).
  • Developing productive relationships with local kindergartens to get to know students who are at risk before they arrive at the school and conducting Ravens/Peabody tests with them.
  • Initiating the Yarrawonga Early Years Group to discuss local issues around transition from Kinder-Prep and early years issues, consisting of A.P YPS and Principal Sacred Heart, teachers from both schools and a representative from every Kindergarten in Yarrawonga.
  • Strategic alignment of teacher professional standards to agreed literacy, numeracy and student engagement strategies through the performance review process.
  • Pre-Prep assessments to obtain information about where all students new to the school in Prep have learning strengths, difficulties and areas that need further development.
  • Ravens & Peabody tests conducted for all students considered at risk at both Kindergarten and Prep years.
  • Discussion around students once a fortnight as a welfare committee consisting of Principal, Assistant Principal, Teachers, Social Worker, Welfare Coordinator and Psychologist.
  • Screening of Prep students in the areas of Speech Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Intellectual assessment and intervention.
  • Supporting students with follow up through ES staff, 5 hours of O.T follow up and 2 hours of speech follow up.
  • Individual Learning Plans that have strategies and learning goals for all students to meet who are achieving above or below expected levels in the curriculum.
  • Intervention programs for students having difficulty in the areas of literacy and numeracy. (Elementary Maths Mastery and MultiLit), also through ICT programs including Maths Blaster, Reading Blaster,
