Every Wednesday morning at 8.15am students and staff of Yarrawonga College P-12 (Secondary Campus) are invited to attend the weekly FREE Big Breakfast. This program was initiated through a Community Learning Project conducted by six students who attended a leadership school in Term 2, 2009, in Glenormiston. Through surveys of students and teachers it was discovered that 46% of students came to school on an empty stomach. As a result, the need for a breakfast program was evident. To raise awareness of the importance of a healthy breakfast, a Big Breakfast was organised last August involving the entire College. Dan Thompson (Dietician from the Community Health Centre) addressed the school on the importance of eating breakfast, whilst teachers and the Year 9 Leadership Team cooked and served breakfast. Since the official Big Breakfast, students and staff have enjoyed a FREE healthy breakfast every Thursday morning at the College, eating a variety of breakfast foods including egg and bacon rolls, fruit, cereal, toast, pancakes and juice. The response from the student body has been fantastic with over 100 students enjoying breakfast each week, with numbers continuing to increase. There are also spot prizes each morning which students just love! This is a great opportunity for students and staff to meet on an informal basis and form many positive relationships. The program is continuing every Thursday from 8.15am for 2010 and will no doubt be on the agenda once again for 2011. Current Produce Sponsors |
